Chapter 11
Noah had a restless night's sleep, still reeling from Harriet's revelations about his birth. In some ways, it was a relief to know the truth—that he had never personally done anything to make his father hate him. Daniel hadn’t been able to fight his demons—he’d made too many bad mistakes, hurt too many people. People he was supposed to protect and love.
As Noah dressed in his formal black trousers and jacket, he resolved to take a break from thinking about it. At least for today. Today was all about Darcy and Meghan. About welcoming his new sister into the family.
Thoughts of Riley brightened his sombre mood. What was she doing right now? Would she be wearing a dress to the wedding like the other women or, stubborn as she was, would she attend in her usual jeans and shirt? He’d like to see her in a dress. Something short, he hoped, so he could see her legs.
He remembered the way she’d made his pulse race and his hands sweaty and had him tripping over his words and responding in unusual ways. Normally he wouldn’t trust someone so quickly, especially with his heart. But there was something about Riley that made him comfortable. Like she would keep his secrets and help him through his dark times. He had never met anyone like her before.
In the kitchen, he helped himself to a cup of tea and cereal before sitting down next to Lachie who was munching on some toast.
Their mother was busy packing bags and doing last-minute preparations so they could leave. Her demeanour was bright and cheerful despite last night’s revelations.
“Someone's excited then.” Lachie laughed at his mother as she bustled out of the room.
“She probably doubted any of us would ever get married.” Noah smiled.
Lachie chuckled. “Especially after my fiasco. Lucky you weren’t here for that.”
Noah turned to his brother, a wave of sympathy overcoming him. “That must've been tough, mate, what happened. Good on you for handling it the way you did.”
“I didn't handle it that well. I crashed the quad. But, in hindsight, it happened the way it was supposed to happen. Meghan’s much better off with Darcy.” Maturity seemed to have hardened Lachie’s features overnight. “What went wrong with you and Jade?”
Noah scratched nervously behind his ear. “I think we just grew apart. In the end, we both wanted different things. She's got a new guy now and is really happy. To be honest, I really don't have much to go back to in New Zealand.”
“Well, it's been a real help you being here. You will always be welcome at Brigadier Station. I might even pay you if you do a good enough job.” Lachie smiled. A teasing glint twinkled in his eye.
“Maybe when Darcy and Meghan get back.” Noah shrugged.
Lachie stared into his bowl and spoke quietly. “I've been thinking, after what Mum said last night—I should give up the drink. I don't want to be like Dad.”
Noah studied his brother. Lachie had never looked so vulnerable and honest before.
